Morgan Park Academy
Morgan Park Academy (MPA), 2153 W. 111th St., a leading independent kindergarten through 12th grade educational institution, will host an open house on Sunday, Feb. 7, at 1 p.m. The event will give parents, who are interested in cultivating the full potential of their children, an opportunity to examine the academy’s unique approach to educational excellence. For more than 137 years, MPA has remained committed to supporting and promoting an educational environment where children become independent thinkers and ultimately, global leaders. As a result, graduates of the Academy are consistently accepted to the finest colleges and universities.
Activities and information presented at the open house will focus on providing insight on the academy’s world-class faculty, sustainable campus community, commitment to diversity, and global approach to education.
Dr. Catherine Raaflaub, the academy’s first female Head of School, encourages all parents who are looking for educational opportunities and advantages for their children to attend the academy’s open house and spend some time speaking with teachers, touring the campus and meeting with administrators.

St. Bernadette
St. Bernadette Elementary School, 9311 S. Francisco Ave., in Evergreen Park, is accepting applications for admission for the 2010-2011 school year. Mt. Assisi Academy
The Mt. Assisi Academy (MAA) math team, under the guidance of Linda Frieh and Susie Morrisey, participated in the Catholic Math League South competition at Br. Rice High School. In the competition which included 11 other schools, MAA’s high scorers included Margaret Sojka, freshman, algebra I; Lisa Izquierdo, junior, algebra II; Jennifer Ferchau, junior, algebra II; and Georgina O’Driscoll, senior, pre-calculus.
In oral competition MAA senior Lisa Izquierdo captured fourth place honors, assisted by senior Maria Radcliffe.
MAA’s freshman relay team of Sharon Desparrois, Margaret Sojka, Meredith Byrnes and Jordan Lenihan captured fifth place.
Barbara Vick Early Childhood & Family Center
The Barbara Vick Early Childhood & Family Center Parents & Teachers Together will hold its annual fundraiser on Friday, Feb. 26, from 8 p.m. to midnight, at 115 Bourbon Street, 3359 W. 115th St., in Merrionette Park. The evening will include dinner and entertainment along with raffles, splitthe- pots and silent auctions. This year’s entertainment will be The Larkin & Moran Brothers and The Pipes and Drums of the Chicago Police Department. Tickets are $30 in advance, $35 at the door. Poster Contest
State’s Attorney Anita Alvarex is encouraging junior high students throughout Cook County to submit their creative artwork that presents positive messages and advice on how young people can say no to illegal drugs. Winning entries will be featured in a calendar that is published by the State’s Attorney’s Office and distributed to schools throughout Cook County. Entries must be submitted by Wednesday, March 31. Teen Summit
The Monarch Awards Foundation, Inc. Xi Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. held a teen summit on Jan. 18, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, at DuSable High School. Panel members included Harold Davis, of Amer- i-can; Michael Shields, a Chicago Public Schools safety and security officer; and Phillip Jackson, of Black Star Project. State Rep. Monique D. Davis (D-27th) was the keynote speaker and remarks were given by Dr. Lattice Eagleton and Dr. Michelle Willis.
Davis told the young people to set goals and not allow anything to deter them from their goals. She advised the pupils to tell teachers, parents and principals when some threat occurs.
The students from Morgan Park High School, Whitney Young High School and a number of elementary schools were very attentive and strong participants in the program.
The program ended with entertainment featuring cheerleaders, dancers and music.
Governors State University
The Governors State University master’s in occupational therapy student organization and Heartland Blood Centers will co-host a blood drive on Thursday, Feb. 4, from 3 to 7 p.m., in Engbretson Hall, 1 University Parkway, in University Park. Students, staff, faculty and community members are encouraged to donate blood. No appointment is required. Walk-ins are always welcome. Donors are reminded to eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of water prior to donating. Donors must be at least 17-years-old, weigh at least 110 lbs and be in good health. Sixteen-year-olds may donate with parental consent. A photo ID is required.
Mt. Carmel
A group of pro-life Mt. Carmel High School students traveled across the country to Washington, D.C., recently to participate in the annual March for Life Rally.
Theology faculty member and service program coordinator Kevin Hansen led the group of students to Washington. Students participating in the March for Life were seniors Nicholas Allen and Mike Maloney; juniors Kevin Smith, of Beverly, Jim Easterhouse, Sean Borisy and Connor McNamara, of Beverly; sophomore Tom Parus, of Beverly, and freshmen Kevin Haley and Richard Perez.
The Mt. Carmel caravan of students gathered with hundreds of thousands of other pro-life supporters from throughout the country in the nation’s capitol on Jan. 22, the anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision to legalize abortion.
